Temple of the Holy Spirit

The believers in Corinth lived amidst a culture that considered casual sex to be of little consequence (sound familiar?). Paul counters with two important assertions: (1) Sexual intercourse is not like other bodily activities (e.g. eating); it has profound and lasting effects. (2) Our spirit and our body are thoroughly joined so that Christ-in-us partakes of our sexual choices. Two important commandments follow. Flee immorality. Honor God.

Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

From Series: "Body. Life."

This sermon series picks up where we left off in February 2012 in the series "Moving on to Maturity" - in the middle of chapter six of 1 Corinthians. As we move selectively through the remaining ten chapters of the letter, we will use Paul's discussion of 'body' (Greek, soma) in its various meanings to choose passages for study. First, we'll consider the use of the word 'soma' to describe our ordinary human body (especially its sexual capacity), "the body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord." Further on, 'soma' signifies the bread of the communion table, "this is my body which is for you." and shortly after, the apostle declares of the church community, "you are the body of Christ." Finally in chapter 15 we read, "the body...is raised imperishable." These texts offer direct instruction and suggest wonderful implications. We should choose obedience and embrace opportunity. 'The Lord is for the body'. Let's not miss out.
