Life Lessons

Steve Zeisler will look back over 40 years pastoring at PBC and will introduce Paul's use of 'body' in 1 Corinthians. Throughout history human bodies have been either pampered and worshiped or treated as the seat of temptation. Paul's teaching about the body in 1 Corinthians does not allow for such separation. Instruction here is sometimes a clear call to action and sometimes a mystery to be contemplated. The language is earthy at one moment and soaring the next. "Therefore glorify God in you body." Scripture: 1 Corinthians

From Series: "Body. Life."

This sermon series picks up where we left off in February 2012 in the series "Moving on to Maturity" - in the middle of chapter six of 1 Corinthians. As we move selectively through the remaining ten chapters of the letter, we will use Paul's discussion of 'body' (Greek, soma) in its various meanings to choose passages for study. First, we'll consider the use of the word 'soma' to describe our ordinary human body (especially its sexual capacity), "the body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord." Further on, 'soma' signifies the bread of the communion table, "this is my body which is for you." and shortly after, the apostle declares of the church community, "you are the body of Christ." Finally in chapter 15 we read, "the body...is raised imperishable." These texts offer direct instruction and suggest wonderful implications. We should choose obedience and embrace opportunity. 'The Lord is for the body'. Let's not miss out.
