Ruth set out to glean during the barley harvest. She 'happened on to the field of Boaz' (2:3), and we are introduced to the third key figure in this story. Boaz is uniquely qualified to raise up and restore Naomi/Ruth from their desperate circumstances. God's provision, long in the making, was hidden from view and discovered in a beautiful way as Ruth and Boaz 'speak from the heart' to one another (2:8-13). As a 'kinsman redeemer' Boaz prefigures the great redemption found in Jesus Christ.
