Come and Rejoice for Our God Reigns

In this text, Paul is in prison and doesn’t know if he will ever be released. His eternal perspective and hope control his response – leading him to joy. This letter is the most joyful of all of the letters in the New Testament. Paul has presented the reason for rejoicing and this current passage contains a summary exhortation to respond in worship to God – with rejoicing. Jewish piety had three components that are certainly contained in this letter; rejoicing, prayer, and thanksgiving which are expressions of a heart committed to God. In the New Testament this piety comes through our relationship to Jesus Christ.
