Daily Reflections for Advent
Advent is a time of preparation. We prepare our hearts as we seek to focus on the real meaning of Christmas: Jesus’ life with us and in us. We are preparing our homes to reflect the joy of this season. We are preparing gifts for our loved ones. But, we are not the only ones preparing. God has been preparing Christmas Day for us, and it is this holy preparation that we anticipate.
MON, DECEMBER 3 – WORSHIP Matthew 2:1-2, 10-11
Reflect: How are you preparing your heart to worship Jesus this Advent season?
Pray: Ask that the Lord would help you direct your attention and aﬀection toward him.
TUES, DECEMBER 4 – HOPE Isaiah 9:6-7
Reflect: How does the prophetic description of the coming Child in Isaiah 9 give you hope in the present and for the future?
Pray: Pray that God would align your hopes with his plans.
WED, DECEMBER 5 – HUMILITY Philippians 2:3
Reflect: In what areas of life do you need to grow in humility?
Pray: Confess your pride to the Lord and ask for his help in growing in humility.
THURS, DECEMBER 6 – INCARNATION John 1:1-3, 14
Reflect: How does Jesus’ “becoming ﬂesh” and “dwelling among us” reveal the glory of God?
Pray: Pray that, through Jesus, God would reveal his glory to those who don’t know him this Christmas season.
FRI, DECEMBER 7 – IMMANUEL Matthew 1:18-23
Reflect: Do you sense the presence of God in your life through Jesus and his Spirit?
Pray: Thank Jesus for leaving the glory of heaven so that he could be in an intimate relationship with you.
SAT, DECEMBER 8 – SUBMISSION Luke 1:26-38
Reflect: Are you ready to act as a servant of the Lord no matter what he may ask of you?
Pray: Tell God that you are his servant, and ask him to use you according to his will.
MON, DECEMBER 10 – RELATIONSHIP Luke 10:38-42
Reflect: How could you focus on doing things with Jesus rather than for him this advent season?
Pray: Tell Jesus about your desire to spend time with him.
TUES, DECEMBER 11 – DISTRACTION Hebrews 12:1-2
Reflect: What are the “weights” and “sins” that distract you from pursuing Jesus wholeheartedly?
Pray: Acknowledge these distractions to the Lord and fix your eyes on Jesus in prayer.
WED, DECEMBER 12 – LISTENING 1 Kings 19:11-13
Reflect: Do you actively try to listen to the Lord?
Pray: Ask the Lord to speak to you clearly.
THURS, DECEMBER 13 – OBEDIENCE James 1:22-25
Reflect: What is the relationship between listening to the Word and doing what it says?
Pray: Ask God for an increased desire to listen to the Word of God and obey it.
FRI, DECEMBER 14 – ANXIETY Matthew 6:31-34
Reflect: How might anxiety be an indication that you are not seeking the kingdom of God above all else?
Pray: Ask the Father to help you seek the kingdom of God as your first priority.
SAT, DECEMBER 15 – JOY Luke 2:8-11
Reflect: How have you experienced joy in your relationship with Jesus?
Pray: Ask the Lord for greater joy in him.
MON, DECEMBER 17 – BEING KNOWN 1 Corinthians 13:12
Reflect: Do you long to know the Lord more deeply than you do
Pray: Pray that you could know the Lord more deeply, as you are known by him.
TUES, DECEMBER 18 – RESURRECTION 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Reflect: How does our future resurrection give hope to us in this life?
Pray: Ask God to help you find hope in the midst of your present sorrows
WED, DECEMBER 19 – VICTORY 1 Corinthians 15:54-58
Reflect: How does Jesus’ victory over death impact your life today?
Pray: Pray that more people would be able to participate in Jesus’ victory over death and experience life in him.
THURS, DECEMBER 20 – DELIGHT Isaiah 62:1-5
Reflect: Do you believe that the Lord delights in you?
Pray: Meditate on the truth that God delights in you as a husband delights in his bride.
FRI, DECEMBER 21 – DWELLING John 1:1
Reflect: What does the incarnation show us about God’s desire to dwell with us?
Pray: Tell Jesus about your desire to dwell with him.
SAT, DECEMBER 22 – COMFORT Revelation 21:4
Reflect: How have you experienced God’s comfort in the midst of the suffering of this life?
Pray: Ask God to wipe away the tears from your eyes in this life and praise him for the final removal of suffering in the future.
