SLI runs for 10 weeks from mid-June to mid-August. We offer some flexibility on exact dates, as students from different colleges are often on different schedules.
As a participant in the Summer Leadership Institute, you will receive some financial assistance for the time you devote to ministry and training here at PBC. We recognize that by joining us, you are foregoing other summer job opportunities, and we want to offer enough compensation to help ease your financial burden.
Specifically, we are prepared to offer summer interns $10/hour for up to 25 hours/week spent in class and ministry for your 10 weeks with us - up to a total of $2500 for the summer. In addition, if you are in need of housing during that time, we may be able to provide you with a place to stay.
Each intern will be assigned to a particular ministry to work with throughout the summer. The high school group involves spending time with high schoolers, planning activities, and several special events throughout the summer. The junior high group runs programs for kids in middle school: bible studies, small groups, and social activities. Interns working in college ministry will help to organize weekly college activities and spend time with local college students in the area. Interns in children's ministry will help with Sunday morning children's programs as well as weekly children's programs and Vacation Bible School. Working in music/arts involves the opportunity to participate in the worship band and contribute to the various arts projects that happen around our church. Finally, working in administration offers the chance to minister to the church administrative staff and work on projects throughout the church to enable the organization to run more smoothly. If you have questions about which ministry you would be the best fit for, contact Paul or Jordan.
Each week of SLI will typically include class time, a ministry event, a meeting with your mentor, and a community activity. While you will get paid for up to 25 hours/week, we encourage you to spend an additional 15 hours/week in study.
The entire SLI community will take a retreat together at some point early in the summer to foster community and provide an opportunity to go deeper in your relationship with God. The retreat will likely take place over 2 nights and will include personal reflection time, community worship, hang-out time, and sharing.
SLI interns will be responsible for either organizing and/or helping with one major service project for the summer. The details regarding this project will be decided upon as the summer progresses, but it will primarily be an opportunity for SLIers to work together to benefit our community in some way.

The SLI experience culminates with the annual PBC all-church camping trip at Lake Siskiyou near Mt. Shasta. This is a time where approximately 200 people from the PBC community go camping together for 5 days. SLI will have a significant role in planning and supporting this event including helping families with setup and tear-down, planning evening campfires (including funny skits), and helping with children's activities. There'll also be plenty of time to have fun yourself and enjoy the lake, hiking, etc.
