Israel is criticized for their lack of faithfulness to their God. Their apostasy is likened to a faithless lover. Instead of a lifelong love relationship with YHWH, they prefer one-night stands with idols. Our tendency is the same: we prefer the easy simplicity of false gods to the commitment of relationship with YHWH. But God fulfills our deepest desires, he doesn't just give us cheap fixes to what we want.
