We often think that God required His people to rest for one day a week so that they could be work efficient during the other six days. But God's command to His people to observe Sabbath doesn't have anything to do with efficiency. Instead, they have everything to do with dependency. God's people are commanded to observe the Sabbath in order to remember that God's work in creation is done. Sabbath is also a sign that distinguishes God's people from the nations surrounding them. Finally, Sabbath reminds God's people that He has redeemed them.
